Introduction

 This project funded by the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme of Education Bureau of Hong Kong Government, with a grant of HK$2,018,274 in 2019, aimed to provide customized and individualized support for SEN students. It focused on equipping them with psychological readiness, practical experiences, and the skills needed for a smooth transition to advanced studies in tertiary institutions and future career development. The project adopted a holistic approach to address the diverse support needs of SEN students across multiple dimensions. It supported students in achieving their academic goals while enhancing their preparation for lifelong planning. Additionally, training was provided to teachers and student counsellors to strengthen their ability to deliver individualized academic guidance and career facilitation.

Project Content

Goals

This project aimed to provide customized and individualized support for SEN students, equipping them with psychological readiness and practical experiences, and preparing them for a smooth transition to advanced studies in tertiary institutions and future career development.

Objectives

  1. To set up an SEN Comprehensive Support Team comprising 1 full-time SEN Project Officer and 1 full-time SEN Project Assistant.
  2. To conduct early identification of students with suspected SEN.
  3. To provide further support for teachers to strengthen their know-how.
  4. To provide training for both teaching and supporting staff to offer appropriate and timely support to SEN students.
  5. To set up the Inclusion Ambassadors Scheme.
  6. To cultivate a positive and caring campus environment.

Outcomes

  1. Establishment of SEN Comprehensive Support Team responsible for coordinating and organizing all training activities and events related to SEN for the whole College.
  2. SEN students' statistics and special examination arrangement.
  3. List of students with SEN identified for consideration (for internal use only).
  4. Academic advising for SEN students (for internal use only).
  5. Individual support plan and progress report (for internal use only).
  6. Career preparation workshops.
  7. Interim report on the research results of the needs of SEN students at tertiary education will be studied.
  8. Staff training programmes for teachers and supporting staff.
  9. SEN students' consolidated profiles for advising appropriate developmental activities.
  10. Inclusive Promotion Campaign.
  11. Inclusion Ambassadors Training Programme.
  12. Evaluation report of the campaign.
  13. Publication on findings of SEN student support services in tertiary institutions.

Beneficiaries

  1. All students suspected of and diagnosed with SEN were included.
  2. Around 8,000 students, teachers, and staff in HKCC benefited from the promotional campaign.
  3. Training was provided for students and teaching staff members.

  1. Cases Review & New intakes: 133 SEN students were recorded by the end of October 2019. 54 SEN cases were reviewed. 79 SEN freshmen were interviewed during August to October 2019 in intake.

  2. Programme Leaders meeting: Meeting with programme leaders for the mechanism in handling SEN students in class. The first programme leaders meeting was held on 15 Jan 2020.

  3. Quarterly Progress Meeting: The first committee meeting was held on 29 November 2019. The second meeting was held on 18 March 2020. The progress of the project was reported. The plans for activities and trainings were also approved in the meetings.

 

Stage Two (1 April 2020 – 30 September 2020)


  1. Organize Soft Skills Enhancement Workshops on articulation and career planning for students through U Programme:

  1. CAR Programme was aimed at enhancing a group of SEN students for their career readiness and assisting them with career planning. All year 1 SEN students were invited to join this programme:
  1. Meeting with Program Leaders for the mechanism in handling SEN students in class: The third Programme Leaders Meeting was held online via Microsoft Teams on 8 January 2021. The updated SEN statistics, and the progress and future plan of DAI project were reported.
